Local History

A small group has been researching the life of Major Percy Stewart of Burnby Hall Gardens connection, following the refurbishment of the Museum. Some of the group have collected and tape-recorded memories of Major Stewart (who died in 1962) and his wife as recalled by local people who knew them. This research has resulted in a booklet being compiled by Jim and Margaret Ainscough on the Major's life in Pocklington to be available in the Museum.  Major Stewart left Burnby Hall Gardens to a Trust for the benefit of the people of Pocklington. Click here for details.

Major Percy Stewart

There may be some interest in using a similar approach to research the impact of the Second World War on life in Pocklington. Although there may be some limited scope for making use of outside speakers, our experience suggests that a small, active and committed group generating its own impetus makes for the most productive and rewarding way forward. If you would like to join this group or chat about what might be involved, please contact: Jim or Margaret Ainscough or email jandm_ainscough@yahoo.co.uk
