The University of the Third Age or “U3A” is a worldwide movement encouraging older people in the “third age” of life to take up or continue educational and other interests in friendly and informal settings. No qualifications are required to join and no qualifications or degrees are awarded. Members are encouraged to see the value and take pleasure in learning for its own sake. U3A started in France in 1972 and came to Britain over 20 years ago. Most teaching comes from the ranks of its own members. In the UK there are now 578 U3A branches with over 150,000 members. It is one of the fastest growing organizations in the country where people organize themselves for the purpose of learning. The precise pattern varies from place to place but a typical U3A offers a range of interest groups from language classes to archaeological and philosophical studies and from art and craft groups to music appreciation and creative writing. As leadership comes from the members themselves, a U3A member may be a student in one group one day and a leader or tutor the next. It is not always necessary to have an expert as a leader. In some subjects, members learn from each other and the role of the leader is to encourage everyone to take part.
Pocklington & District U3A was established in 2005 and now has 260 members and 28 special interest groups who share many educational, creative and leisure activities. members enjoy the benefits of:
We are steadily creating an interesting and varied programme. To maintain this energy we would like to hear of suggestions and ideas for new groups. Could you co-ordinate a new group? You don’t necessarily have to have expert knowledge but just to organise members with similar interests to get together. It might be for just a few meetings to explore the subject or visiting places of interest. Without participation from you we cease to exist – as the whole ethos of U3A is self help. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience in our midst – why not share it with others? Please forward any ideas to a member of the Committee.Click Here to Join Pocklington & District U3A
