The group was reconvened last
autumn and we had our first meeting at the end of November 2007 when
we broke the ice by having an enjoyable reading of “The Prime of
Miss Jean Brodie”. Since then, we have regularly met on the last
Monday of the month at Pocklington Methodist Church. Our total
membership is about 14.
I am very pleased with the way things have gone. So far, we have
concentrated on 20th Century Literature and intend to continue with
this theme for a while longer, as it is far from exhausted, and
there are many aspects of 20th Century Literature that would prove
to be of great interest. We have ranged far and wide, looking at
novels, poetry, individual authors such as P. G. Wodehouse,
movements, plays, American writers and some aspects of non-fiction
writing.
We shall probably launch the
new season with another play reading as this ensures that all
members can actively participate and it makes for a very enjoyable
session. We are a very loquacious group in general, so our
discussions are usually varied and lively. One of the aspects about
sharing our literary preferences and experiences is that a very wide
variety of topics are brought to our attention. The date of the
first meeting will be announced as soon as arrangements have been
made but we will probably need to exchange views about this on our
next Drop-In morning.
New members are, of course, welcome and I also
look forward to renewing old acquaintances. If you would like to join this new Literature
Group please contact Peter Thomas.
Next meeting of English Literature Group is
on Monday, 27th October at 1.30 in the Bolton Room, Methodist
Chapel. A planning session to discuss ideas and policies. |
