Mediaeval Monasteries After pleasant and informative trips over the summer to sites including Roche Abbey (a great picnic) and Mount Grace Priory (a superb pub lunch) we are resuming our regular monthly meetings at Millington Village Hall in October. During the coming months we aim to examine in more detail the growth of Cistercian Monasticism in the north. The establishment of Rievaulx Abbey became the inspiration for a whole series of foundations such as Melrose, Revesby, Byland and Fountains. It is this renewal of monastic idealism, the buildings it produced and the life and labours of the monks, that we hope to explore in greater depth. In December we are planning a trip to York to examine the glass in the Minster and have our Christmas lunch. Contact: Peter Burridge.
