News Chairman's Review: Dear Pocklington U3A Members I hope you can all look back on an enjoyable summer (notwithstanding the wet weather). As a branch of U3A we continue to thrive and now have a membership of 247 and growing. With 28 well-established groups and another 8 or so new groups in the process of forming, it gives us plenty of scope to enjoy and develop our interests in the company of old (and new) friends. The interest groups are the lifeblood of U3A thanks to the hard work put in by co-ordinators and of course they very much depend on your active involvement. My thanks to you all for commitment and also to the Committee for the great support they have given me. John M Taylor - Chairman
Assistance Required for Computer Courses: Since receiving the Lottery grant to buy computers demand for IT courses has been consistently high. To service this demand we are hoping to recruit some experienced users of email/internet etc. to assist in running of courses over the next year. I am sure there is a wealth of experience out there. Be assured that the commitment will not be onerous. It will be what you decide you can offer and we look forward to hearing from you. Contact: Brian Snelson on email: brian@snelson1.plus.com Communications: Let a committee member know if you have any ideas for new groups or suggestions on how we can improve our branch of U3A. It is also very important to let the Membership secretary know if you change your email address. For those of you not on email we would remind you that we do try to keep the notice board in the Arts Centre up to date, as well as the local Press (Pocklington Post, Stamford Bridge 'The Link', Wilberfoss Newsletter and the East Riding News). Copyright Licence - Group Leaders Please Take Note: Pocklington U3A has obtained a Copyright Licence for Adult and Community Learning (ACL) effective 1 August 2008 until 31 July 2009. This licence provides a right to photocopy or scan from any publication (book, journal or magazine) published in the UK (and other countries) without having to approach the individual rights holder's on each occasion with the proviso that this is used for educational purposes only. Any further details please contact Val or Ted House. Membership - Pocklington & District U3A now has 247 members with 28 established groups, an indication that we are steadily creating an interesting and varied programme. To maintain this energy we would like to hear of suggestions and ideas for new groups. Could you co-ordinate a new group? You don’t necessarily have to have expert knowledge but just to organise members with similar interests to get together. It might be for just a few meetings to explore the subject or visiting places of interest. Without participation from you we cease to exist – as the whole ethos of U3A is self help. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience in our midst – why not share it with others? Please forward any ideas to Malcolm Smalley. Subscriptions - remain unchanged - at £10 from April 2008. People joining mid-term only need to pay £5 in October. If you wish to continue as a member, please complete and return the slip (at the foot of the AGM notice printed in the March Newsletter) to Stan Thornton or hand it in at the AGM. You will then receive your new membership card. Website -
