Chairman's Note
Dear Members,
I hope this newsletter
finds you well, that you have had a good
Christmas and are now enjoying 2010,
attending courses, maybe making new friends.
Our Drop-ins, on the
first Thursday in the month at 10:00 a.m. in
Pocklington Arts Centre, continue to be very
popular. We even managed 48 of the usual 68
in the icy weather at the beginning of
January!
We now have 39 groups,
the latest being Recorder. I somehow find
time to go to six different ones and am sure
that I am not the only person to find my
life enriched immeasurably by learning with
other people. Our current membership is 386
and growing. Our groups are well established
and the group co-ordinators work extremely
hard to make them enjoyable. The interest
groups are the lifeblood of the U3A and if
you feel that you can take a small group in
a new subject, there is room for more!
Thanks to the efforts of
all the co-ordinators and the active
involvement of everyone else, the
Pocklington branch grows from strength to
strength. My thanks to all the committee for
the great support they have given me, again,
this year as Chairman.
Alex Clark - Chairman
Group Co-ordinator’s
Report
September's
Newsletter flagged up two new courses,
Italian Conversation and Craft. These two
new groups are proving to be very popular
and successful and our thanks go to Sheila
Powell and Anne Stocks for their enthusiasm
in launching them. As I write our latest
group, a Recorder Group, has had its first
meeting with Pauline Atkinson as leader.
Pauline also leads the Singing for Pleasure
Group and we thank her for her motivation in
forming this new group.
Membership overall
continues to grow and we are always looking
for new groups. You don‟t
have to be an expert. If you have an
interest you would like to share with
others, just let a committee member know and
we will help you to develop your ideas.
There could well be other members who share
the same interest. Those of you in groups,
do offer to help your leader with the
administration of that group, i.e. offer to
book the room if appropriate, collect any
monies due, contact members or contribute to
any programme.
Please don't
forget, we are a self-help organization.
Nothing happens unless you, the members,
instigate it and constructive comment is
always better than criticism.
