This was a sold-out cruise and with our U3A group discount and door to door coach service too, it did not disappoint!
We were picked up from Pocklington and in two hours we arrived at Newcastle’s’ Port of Tyne cruise terminal. Embarkation was smooth and within 20 minutes we were on board the MS Balmoral. We were bound for Norway on a taster cruise to Bergen and Eidfjord and a few other fjords too.
Bergen, known as the fjord capital of Norway, despite the showers, was a delight. I think we all visited Bryggen, the 11th century UNESCO world heritage site of old Hanseatic buildings and market by the quayside. Some of us took the funicular up to Mount Fløyen whilst others visited Edward Grieg’s home for a concert.
The weather next day in Eidfjord was bright, sunny and warm and the feeling of peace and calm was palpable with the little town of 900 inhabitants wrapped on all sides by mountains and glacier clear water. To round off the day, the Balmoral cruised along Hardangerfjord, ‘Queen of the Fjords’ and the awe-inspiring Fureberg Waterfall following a diversion down the Maurangerfjord.
With a day at sea the cruise was soon at an end. By the way the food was excellent and you could not wish for a more happy, courteous and professional team of employees.
