Dear Fellow Members
I am writing to express my thanks for your support during this most difficult period which, sadly, now looks destined to continue until well into 2021. It now appears unlikely that we will be able to return to anything like our “normal” activities during the remainder of our u3a year ending on the 31st March.
Thanks to the imagination and hard work of their Group Leaders many of our Groups have been able to use social media platforms such as Zoom in order to continue to meet, albeit in a modified format. This is great but for many of our activities this has not been appropriate or possible and so overall we have not operated at anything like our usual level of activity.
Despite the limitations nearly 700 of our members have renewed their membership for this year and without this level of support our local u3a would have struggled to survive. A significant proportion of our current £10 annual subscription is used to cover our fixed costs such as our subscription to the national Third Age Trust who provide insurance cover, legal advice and support to Group Leaders. However, some costs, such as venue hire, have reduced this year and your committee consider it appropriate that these savings should be passed back to the current membership in the form of a “one-off” £2 rebate on next year’s subscription. The rebate is a thank you to our members who continue into 2021/22 while being prudent and responsible with our P&D u3a finances.
Accordingly, current members renewing in the Spring will pay £8 for their 2021/22 membership instead of £10. This reduction will not apply to new members or those who did not maintain their previous membership during 2020/21.
There is nothing you need do at the moment. We will make the necessary adjustment to our arrangements for Membership renewals for 2021/22 and keep you informed. In the meantime, thank you once again for your support.
I wish you a Happy and a Healthy 2021.
Chair, P&D u3a
