Message from Ron Tinkler (Secretary)
Updates this time from two existing Groups and one new Group looking to get underway, plus an invitation to attend the Yorkshire & Humber u3a Zoom AGM. Pocklington & District is one of 51 u3a's that make up the Yorkshire & Humber Region
1 David Hobson, Group Leader Astronomy, is offering a short Zoom presentation which will be of interest to all members of Pocklington and District U3A. " Beauty in the Cosmos"
The idea is to introduce members who do have not much knowledge or possibly little interest in astronomy, but the hope is to illustrate some of the wonders that lie beyond the world upon which we live. There will be some magnificent images showing distant objects in glorious colours. It's arguable that many have an aesthetic quality equal to more familiar works of art. There will be a brief explanation about each image, but it will not linger on detailed science. Regardless, this presentation is suitable for all and is not just for those with an interest in Astronomy or Science
The presentation will provide a brief introduction followed by a series of images, some beautiful and some almost grotesque, but all fascinating. They will all be real images of objects that exist in the heavens and some that can be seen with the naked eye, but not in such detail or splendour. There will be a brief explanation about each image, but don’t be concerned, this is not a technical lecture, and it will not go into any complex or detailed science.
Two images are attached as examples of what will be included.
It is expected that the presentation will last about 20-30 minutes with a short time for questions at the end. It will be held using Zoom and will start promptly at 10.00am on Tuesday 27 April. It will be entitled “Beauty in the Cosmos”. The meeting will be open to join from 9.55am.
It would be appreciated, but not essential, if those interested could let David Hobson know they would like to attend at: email@example.com

2 Yorkshire Wolds Archaeological and History Timeline Driving Trail
With Covid 19 restrictions gradually being lifted members may be looking to venture out and about more. John Ackerley of the Archaeology Group with a little help from Group Leader Peter Ellenger, has put together a history timeline driving trail which can be attempted in parts on separate occasions, or if you are feeling adventurous and have time to spare , you might even attempt it all in one go. It is a Driving Trail with a number of interesting historical and archaeological stops along the way and full details can be found from the attached link. It might always be worthwhile to make contact with any venue you might plan to visit beforehand to check if they are open for visitors and the Covid-19 precautions they have in place.
3 Play Reading Group Your chance to make a drama out of a crisis ?
Gerry Hutchinson is looking for members who would like to join a proposed Play Reading Group which will be held initially via Zoom arrangements.
Help will be offered by phone or email to anyone unsure of the technicalities of Zoom (it's easy when you know how!)
Please get in touch with Gerry by the end of April as it is planned to have an initial 'session' in May and numbers will be limited. tel; 01759 778 208 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
4 (YAHR) Yorkshire & Humber Zoom AGM, Wed, 28th April; 10.30 a.m.
The YAHR committee would like to invite all members of all u3as in our region to attend the annual AGM. There will be a review of a very difficult year but also a look forward to plans and hopes for the future, when it is hoped that YAHR can offer a range of events and support for any of the 51 constituent u3as.
The event is open to every u3a within the YAHR region and we hope that there will be something of interest and hopefully something to inspire; it would be great to have every one of the 51 YAHR u3as represented.
There are plenty of spaces available but to ensure that the YAHR Committee can plan for numbers at this event, everyone is asked to please REGISTER for it via the ‘events’ tab on the YAHR website: https://yahru3a.co.uk
Should you have any questions, comments or issues that you would like to raise under AoB on the agenda, please send them in good time in advance by e-mail to Hazel Ward at email@example.com
